This DVD teased me for ages as it sat on the shelf in my local supermarket. The line on the cover "It's not a remake, it's not a sequel, and it's not based on a Japanese one" totally caught my eye, echoing my thoughts as I search for decent modern horror. This one's about a deformed guy called Victor Crowley who returns from the dead to brutally murder anyone who dares enter his swamp. A bunch of people (including two potential porn stars and a guy making a 'movie' about them with what seems to be a shitty camcorder) go on a night time swamp tour of Crowley's swamp and there the carnage begins.
This is a pretty decent film. It's really watchable. Mucho kudos too, for the imaginative and, at times, plain disgusting ways that Crowley dispatches his visitors. Nasty! It's also got performances from some of horror's greats too with cameos from Robert Englund (Freddy Kruger from the Nightmare on Elm Street series) and Tony Todd (Candyman), and a blinding stint from Kane Hodder (Friday the 13th) as Victor Crowley. The swamp tour people are the usual forgettable axe fodder but that's okay because the script is quite well written and pretty amusing so you can forgive the one dimensional characters.
As horrors go, this is one of the better newer ones I've seen this year! Good for a brainless Saturday night in with some popcorn and wine.
