In 1977, four twenty year olds are driving through rural America gathering information on unusual sideshows for a book they're writing. On arriving at "Captain Spaulding's Museum of Monsters and Madmen" they discover the local legend of Doctor Satan and embark on a detour to look for his fabled place of hanging. After experiencing car trouble on the way, they're taken in by the Firefly family - currently also home to five kidnapped cheerleaders who're being tortured by the eldest brother Otis (Bill Mosley on superb form) and an array of misfit family members under murderous matriarch Mother Firefly. Then the fun begins...
I found this film quite uncomfortable to watch - mainly because the bass notes in Rob Zombie's cutaway scenes went right for my stomach giving me a general sense of 'something's wrong' (nice job Mr Zombie!). The 'Yuck' rating is fairly high too. There's something that you can't quite put your finger on that makes the viewer gripped to this film but at the same time, don't quite want to watch. There isn't really much in the way of plot but the film is visually rich enough that you don't really mind. One for the DVD list!
