Mother
A mother lives a quiet life fussing after her somewhat mentally disabled son Do-joon, whilst selling grain and practicing acupuncture on the side. When a local girl is found murdered the police are only too happy to pin it on Du-joon despite only circumstantial evidence, and coerce a confession. His mother then quests to prove her son's innocence. Allying with Jin-tae, Do-Joon's only friend, she uncovers many unusual facts and unleashes memories best forgotten.
It's an interesting movie, this one. Really well acted and shot, gloomy and foreboding in tone and appearance. It's quite a compelling story - less a whodunit and more an exploration of the lengths a mother will go to for her child. Kim Hye-ja (excuse my lack of knowledge of South Korean naming etiquette - when in doubt, type it all out!) certainly puts in a dramatic and convincing performance as the mother who will do anything for her son. Pretty good really, if a little overlong. Definitely worth a look, tho.
