16 years ago, Joan Burrows escaped the clutches of twisted Ernie Bishop, losing her best friend to the sick games of a serial killer and offing Bishop in the process. Now that she's returning to her hometown for the first time since then in order to attend her niece's graduation, the killings are starting again. Did she really kill Bishop? Or is all not as it seems…
Not entirely sure about this one. I bought it because of the 3D gimmick but to be honest, it's not that great on a home DVD system - and that's despite the fact that I own all the equipment suggested for optimum home viewing. The red/blue specs gave my other half a bit of a headache after a while and (owing to the fact he's red/green colour blind perhaps?) didn't do much for him. I thought it was alright but there weren't really any moments I thought would benefit too much from 3D effects.
3D gimmickry aside, this is your average slasher movie which veers into the alleyways of torture porn on occasion (not my favourite sub genre, I must admit). Although there are some inspired kills, the plot gets fairly predictable - I even declared early on "I bet it's [XXXX]" and I was right. It's fairly graphic in places and not for the faint hearted. As a horror fan that prefers to be terrified than grossed out, it wasn't entirely my cup of tea. That said, it's not a terrible film but it's not a great one either and even a decent overall cast performance (headed by genre darling Angela Bettis playing the adult Joan, mixing strength with fragility to great effect here) can't really save it from mediocrity.
I wouldn't actively seek this one out but I wouldn't avoid it completely either - your call!
