The House that Dripped Blood

Another day, another Amicus anthology! This one is considered to be the best in the series of Amicus portmanteaus and I have to admit it's a pretty good film to watch. The thread holding the stories together concerns a weird old house in the middle of nowhere with a strange past. A policeman visits from Scotland Yard to investigate the latest incident of a film star who's disappeared and tales of mysterious happenings to previous occupants are related to him. The stories themselves are really good - not surprising really since they're written and scripted by Robert Bloch, writer of the novel "Psycho". The first story, "Method For Murder" is about an author who is being driven mad by the villain of his latest novel. Then comes "Waxworks", where two old friends are obsessed with a wax dummy who appears to be the image of a former love. The third story is "Sweets for my Sweet" where Christopher Lee hires a schoolteacher for his young daughter although black magic appears to have reached the house first. Last of all, Jon Pertwee stars as actor Paul Henderson in "The Cloak", the intentionally humorous segment of the movie. Henderson's costume appears to imbue the wearer with vampiric powers...

It's a good film, full of excellent performances and an all-star cast. There was no chance this was going to be shit. It's worth watching for the comedy value of Jon Pertwee as a wide-eyed, slightly maniacal but fairly confused vampire flying on very visible strings!! Not as freaky as Worzell Gummidge but funnier!
