Thir13een Ghosts

I'm typing this as I watch this movie for about the hundredth time - although to be fair, I've not seen it since we replaced the giant plasma screen with a giant HD LCD number so really it doesn't count. I'm not even going to make any pretence at an objective review - I bloody love this film!! After losing his wife and the majority of his belongings in a fire, Arthur Kriticos and his family appear to have finally found good fortune when they inherit their late Uncle Cyrus' mansion. But they've also inherited the 12 ghosts in the basement. And who is going to become the thirteenth ghost?

There is something about this film that just ticks so many boxes for me - haunted house, creepy ghosts, excellent make up and special effects (I recommend you get hold of the DVD and watch some of the featurettes - marvellous viewing!) and some really cracking mythology regarding the origins of the spirits (again, have a squizz at the DVD special features for a really cool pseudo-documentary about the origins of the ghosts - all really interesting and pretty much completely left out of the film but essential viewing I feel). I think that the way the audience is only allowed glimpses of the ghosts at any time just adds to the general disturbance factor of the whole thing - tho we did go a bit crazy with the pause button in order to get a better look at them. It's a real fun one to watch - but best to disregard the cheesy Hollywood bit at the end
